Introducing Certifier: Gamifying Open Source Contributions at DemonDie
R
Founder of DemonDie โ€ข Building developer tools and open-source communities. Creating DemonDie while documenting my journey in tech. Building in public, contributing to open source, and helping developers grow. Open-source enthusiast building products, communities, and opportunities for developers.

Open source projects thrive because of their contributors. Every bug fix, documentation improvement, feature addition, and review helps move a project forward.

But one challenge many communities face is keeping contributors engaged and recognized for their efforts.

To address this, we built Certifier, an automated contributor reward system for the DemonDie organization.

The Problem

Contributors put in valuable work, but recognition often stops at seeing a merged pull request.

While that's rewarding, we wanted to create a system that makes progress visible, celebrates milestones, and encourages long-term participation.

That's where Certifier comes in.

What is Certifier?

Certifier is a gamification platform designed specifically for open-source contributions.

Using GitHub webhooks, it automatically tracks merged pull requests and assigns points based on contribution labels.

Contributors can then:

  • Earn points automatically

  • Unlock achievement badges

  • Track their progress

  • Compete on a public leaderboard

  • Showcase their contributions within the community

The goal is simple: make contributing more fun while recognizing the people who help build our projects.

Badge Progression

As contributors earn more points, they unlock new badge tiers:

๐Ÿ‘น Imp

The first step in your DemonDie journey.

๐Ÿ˜ˆ Fiend

For contributors who consistently participate.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Overlord

Awarded to highly active contributors.

๐Ÿ‘‘ Demon King

The highest contributor rank within the ecosystem.

Each badge represents dedication, consistency, and impact.

How It Works

The workflow is fully automated:

  1. A contributor submits a pull request.

  2. The pull request gets reviewed and merged.

  3. GitHub webhooks notify Certifier.

  4. Points are awarded automatically.

  5. Progress and badges are updated.

  6. Leaderboards refresh in real time.

No manual tracking. No spreadsheets. No extra work for maintainers.

Why We Built It

At DemonDie, we're focused on creating an environment where contributors feel welcomed, motivated, and appreciated.

We believe recognition matters.

Whether someone fixes a typo in documentation or ships a major feature, every contribution helps strengthen the community.

Certifier is our way of celebrating that effort.

What's Next?

This is only the beginning.

We're exploring additional badge categories, contribution tracks, community achievements, and new ways to highlight contributor impact across the organization.
